Dancing is movement to music. Tango epitomizes this concept; why is it then that so much emphasis is given to the steps, figures, embellishments etc.? Probably because students expect to be taught (too quickly) what they perceive as dancing tango. A dance without ganchos, boleos, sacadas just isn't tango for some. All of these of course are part of the dance, but I believe that one must "graduate" to certain movements and not before understanding the mechanics or technique of the dance, developing balance and good coordination and most importantly knowing the music. We don't have to know all the tangos but at the very minimum we must recognize the beat and how to step on time, double the time, pause , stop and start, all the time staying within the musical structure of a song, be it tango, milonga or waltz.
These are just the basics. All figures or elements must be executed and practiced with these musical elements in mind. Both leaders and followers must be very aware of the music, in tango timing is crucial, a sacada or boleo lead out of time can be painful and dangerous.
Some quit tango too soon, they get frustrated at not "getting it" , they start feeling clumsy or inadequate. Some are in a continuous quest for the "perfect' teacher, the one with the magical answer. The answers are within ourselves, do you have an open mind, are you really paying attention in class, are you practicing, are you being patient with yourself, do you really like tango music, do you constantly listen to it.
Learn to listen and feel the music, dancing from the inside will be the ultimate answer to your quest in learning tango and dancing it well. by Linda Garwood
